US Virgin Islands For American travelers, this is a home away from home destination. Nearly as easy as traveling to another state, American travelers have all the ease of traveling within the continental US (including domestic mail service when you need to mail home all your purchases!) but the exotic appeal of a foreign destination. Serious shoppers set their sights on Charlotte Amalie,
St. Thomas to seek out duty-free bargains on jewelry, leather goods, perfumes,
and gemstones. The city is also a good starting point for many St. Thomas
attractions. Take a 50-minute tour aboard the Atlantis submarine for an
unbeatable view of undersea life, or ride the Paradise Point Tramway for
a look at the ship-dotted harbor. Another excellent scenic overlook is
from Mountain Top, the peak of St. Peter Mountain. This shopping complex
claims to be the home of the original banana daiquiri and views the British
Virgin Islands and Magens Bay, a postcard-perfect beach. St. John is a short ferry ride from St. Thomas but offers
an atmosphere that's worlds away from the bustling port island. Tiny St.
John is custom-made for nature lovers, who can camp and hike in the national
park which covers two-thirds of this unspoiled island. And, last but largest,
St. Croix enchants travelers with its small town charm, picturesque Danish
architecture, and one of the Caribbean's finest snorkeling trails at Buck
Island Island hopping is part of life here. St. Thomas and St. John are just a 20-minute ferry ride apart, and it's just another short hop over to the British Virgin Islands, a very popular day trip. Forty miles to the south, St. Croix is connected to St. Thomas by seaplane or by high-speed catamaran.
