Selecting Stone for Our New Walk

We’ve had a gravel walk in front of our house forever…and have talked about changing it to a flagstone walk, well, forever. The gravel gets into the waffle soles of many shoes and finds its way into our house so it was definitely time for a change.
Like many of our DIY projects, though, we decided to do this one in stages, working from our asphalt road to our front gate, a space of just about four feet.
John had measured the space and determined we needed about a quarter ton of stone so off we headed to a local stoneyard. The selection was enormous…
Some was too thick (we needed about 1-1/2 inch thick flagstone), some was too thin…
Some was just too large…
We finally settled upon Oklahoma Chocolate Gold flagstone which had some wonderful veining in the stones and also lots of pretty color (which you’ll see in tomorrow’s photos of the finished…and washed…stones.)
After a forklift came over to move the stones to the scale…
…we had the pickup loaded with our quarter ton of stones (about $75 worth)…
Tomorrow we’ll show you the photos of the walk in progress all the way through to the finished product!
